Why it won't be published
"We took it to just about every publisher on the planet.
They all loved it, but said they couldn't publish it because
of the subject matter"
The words of Mr Jon Hare himself.
As you can probably tell from the name of the title, this is
a game which is heavily orientated around adult material, containing
references to illegal drug taking, bad language, and actions
of an otherwise explicit nature (I won't include details incase
I corrupt some young, naive minds, but I'm sure you can figure
it out).
But surely, with an 18 certificate there shouldn't be a
problem?
I mean, there's nothing in this game which we haven't seen
before. To quote two examples, we have GTA which actively rewards
the user for illegal activites and contains continuous drug
references and DreamWeb which has the same 'otherwise explicit'
material.
So come on publishers - what's the problem?
Okay, so it might receive a bit of bad publicity at first.
But, and correct me if I'm wrong, is it not the controversy,
and publicity which helped bring GTA to the attention of most
people, and probably helped to shift over half of the copies
sold.
It almost makes you think that there's some kind of conspiracy
going on against small innovative software houses like Sensible,
who also had a brush with controversy when some daft people
thought it was outrageous that Sensible put a picture of a poppy
on the front of boxes of Cannon Fodder.
Sensible backed down on this occasion, but it seems that they
aren't going to censor themselves a second time, and rightly
so in my opinion.
As for the idiots who go around saying that computer games
are the cause of all the crime in the country, well congratulations
for making the world boring and stuffy and afraid to admit that
this kind of thing goes on all the time in the real world. For
goodness sake if someone at the age of 18 is still influenced
by things that go on in computer games, and on TV, in films
etc, then there's something seriously wrong with them anyway.
So come on, surely there is a software publisher out there
who's not completely spineless, and is willing to plough some
money into finishing off the project before slapping an 18 certificate
on it, and raking in the profits.
