TACTICS
Choosing the right formation to suit your teams
strengths and weaknesses can be a tricky business. This page is
intended as a basic guide to the formations available on SWOS,
and any User formations which visitors to the site care to send
in.
4-4-2
The standard formation, but in my opinion, it's a bit pants.
It's useful if you have a team with no real star players, and
aids a good passing game, but its not the best way to utilise
the star man in your squad.
5-4-1
Fantastic if you have a really powerful, speedy striker. Loads
of defenders, and midfielders around to win the ball, makes it
a very solid formation, and, by using the Wimbledon long ball
tactic, hoofing the ball 50 yards upfront to your little Michael
Owen of a striker makes dangerous counter attacks very easy. However,
if you don't have a pacy, and poerful striker, you'll find yourself
bogged down in your own defence and struggling to score.
4-5-1
This one is ideal if you have 2 good attacking midfielders, with
good passing. Place them in the two most forward midfield roles,
and then you have a player on both sides of the pitch who can
thread the ball through to your striker. A decent striker will
help, to make those through balls count, and pacy or powerful
midfielders for the attacking roles can be helpful, as they will
get forward to support the striker and probably weigh in with
a fair few goals of their own. Ideal if you have Le Tissier and
Gazza in your squad and you cant decide which one to play!!
5-3-2
Possibly the worst tactic in the game. Personally I cant think
of a good thing to say about it. It leaves your strikers isolated
upfront and the midfield very weak, and sparse. You will find
yourself stuck in your own defence using this very negative formation.
Useful for holding onto a 1-0 lead in the last minute against
Man Utd in the cup. Maybes.
3-5-2
If you have a star attacking midfielder, who is a God at passing,
like Mr Le Tissier for example, this tactic is perfect. Place
him in the attacking midfield role, and he will revel in the opportunity
to slide balls through to the two strikers. Curling passes will
be particularly effective. If your attacking midfielder has pace,
and good dribbling, this is an added bonus as he will get forward
and help out with plenty of goals - I once got Le Tissier to score
over 100 goals in one season from this role!!.
However, it can leave your defence a bit weak, and you will be
particularly vulnerable when the opposition uses the long ball
tactic to bi-pass your midfield, so a pretty good centre back
will be needed. You can also help to bolster your defence by playing
two defenders, or midfielders with good tackling in the two defensive
midfield roles.
4-3-3
Another formation, I'm not that fond of, as again, it leaves
you with a weak midfield. Use if you have two particularly pacy
strikers, and one who has less pace but good power. Play the two
pacy strikers in the wide positions, and the slower one in the
middle. However, i often find, this is a waste of strikers, as
they tend to struggle to get goals from out wide. Alternatively
you could play wingers in the wide attacking positions. Still,
a tactic I would avoid as I belive the midfield is a key area
if you are to succeed, and three men is not enough to have in
their.
4-2-4
Okay, so after all I've said about making sure you have plenty
of men in midfield, how can I reccommend this tactic?? Well, actually
I can, because, basically, this is just 4-4-2, with the wingers
pushed forward a but. Absolutely perfect if you have a couple
of lightning quick wingers, as they will provide you with plenty
of goals, and will be quick enough to get back to help out your
midfield. Quick full backs are also an advantage as they can help
out your midfield, when the wingers venture upfield.
3-4-3
This is another of those "I have three £15M strikers
and I don't know which two to play" formations. Haven't really
used this formation much, so cant really comment too much on it,
but then again, maybes I have just said all that needs to be said
in my first two sentences?
Sweep
Like 4-4-2, but this has an advantage over the standard 4-4-2
if you have an absolute rock of a centre back, as you can utilise
his full potential by putting him in the sweeper role and he will
clear all the mistakes, that the other, rather less reliable centre-back
that you own, makes in that positino just infront of him.
5-2-3
The other, sparse midfield tactic that is vaguely usable providing
you have good wide men. Perfect if you prefer using the flanks
rather than playing through midfield. Play pacy wingers in the
full back roles, and you will want two pretty decent defensive
midfielders to play in the middle. Meet these two criteria and
you may be successful with this tactic.
Attack / Defend
Just don't even think about it, OK?. These are very bad tactics.
Using the Attack formation, all your attackers get in each others
way, and vice-versa with the Defend tactic. Avoid or I will personally
come round your house and give you a slap.

an edited 4-4-2 formation by Gazz1986
It is a 4-4-2 formation. It gets ticks withe every player in
the world from the default 4-4-2 except in one center back posision.
This is because he is used very much as the last man standing.
The other defender makes runs. It was designed to have my players
where I wanted them for things like long balls etc and once you
are used to where they are it is great. A long ball down the wing
from the full back to the winger always gets you a clear chance
to shoot.

Appears to be some variant of the 4-4-2 formation. I am told
that the values of your strikers, central midfielders and centre-backs
will all go up using this tactic, and that has got to be a good
thing!

I've made 3 changes to the original 4-2-4 formation:
1) Backs (LB & RB) have been moved towards the middle of
the field. -ADVantages: the defense is more "condensed"
and opponent's wingers are a bit isolated towards the touch line.
-DISadvantages: too many defenders can cause confusion ("which
one should I play with?").
2) The two central midfielders (M) have been moved a bit closer
to each other. -ADV: helps you stop opponent's attacking through
the middle. -DIS: makes passing game more difficult, so you have
to play with long balls.
3) Wingers (LW & RW) have been moved a bit forward and a
bit towards the middle. -ADV: now you really have 4 attackers.
Wingers are perfectly positioned for scoring goals. -DIS: too
many attackers in one place can confuse you. It is also difficult
to "spread" the opponent's defense, since all your attackers
are practically in, or very near the penalty box. 424myway.tac
is perfect if you have fast wingers with good shooting and finishing
and your attackers aren't perfect (my favorite team is Ajax and
this formation suits me very well).

An adapted 4-5-1 formation from James West, he claims : "in
most cases when you sellect this tactic all the players in the
team will get a tick from the assisten coach, all their values
will increase very well over time. "

User E : "New 4-3-3" by Alex Laugharne
This tactic is liked by almost all the players, except the last
man who sits on the goal line and helps the crap keeper. Also,
the one midfielder sits deep and mops up all attempted clearances
from the opposition, but he often isn't too pleased about this,
but he still is very useful.

In the file 451a, the wingers are more central, and move into
attacking positions as the striker drops back into midfield to
collect passes. This makes it very good for counterattacking.
Should the striker play the ball to one of the wingers who are
just off-centre at this time then he will attempt to run forward
to take up a postion in the box. This gets a positive responce
from all but the last central midfielder, the wingers to not get
any responce at all from the assistant coach.

451AM, plays with the wingers wide, the two furthest forward
midfielders then attack and support the striker. The striker will
still drop back to link up with the midfiled, but any pass made
left or right will be met by a midfielder and not a winger. This
formation offeres a lot more width and space in which to pass
the ball.
