    Wizkid

Back to Back Catalogue Screenshots Download

    Game genre : Arcade/adventure

    Publisher : Ocean

    Released : 1992

    Platform : Amiga/ST

No of players - 1 player

A long, long time ago (1987), Wizball, Wizard and Nifta the cat banished Zark from the land of Wiz for being naughty. Everyone lived happily ever after. Nifta had 8 kittens and Wizard and Wizball got married and had a kid....Wizkid. Well, Zark came back one night and kidnapped Wizard, Wizball and Nifta. He threw Wizard and Wizball into dungepns in his castle and put Nifta in the turtle jail on round 9. Your mission as Wizkid is to collect as many kittens as possible, release Nifta from Chokey and battle on to Zarks castle.

As the above storyline may suggest, this is one of the most bizarre, surreal, and original pieces of software in gameplaying history. It is to the gaming industry, what the wheel was to the caveman. It really is, just so difficult to describe this game. It's a puzzle game, platformer, adventure game and arcade game all rolled into one.

It's packed full of sureal Sensi humour, and some incredibly unique ideas, which add a lot to the gameplay. The general idea, is that you control the head of 'Wizkid' and use this to send bricks, and all sorts of other bizarre things, around the screen, in order to kill the bad guys. If you kill all the baddies, then you move on to the next screen. If you run out of bricks, you move on to the next screen, but go back to incompleted screens later on. Once you've completed all the screens in a level, you collect a kitten and move on to the next level.

It sounds simple, except for the fact that if you play the game like this, you will only ever see half of the game, and probably will not collect enough kittens to defeat the evil Zark at the end of the game - confused? I'll try to explain.

You see, this game introduces a novell, and clever method of level traversal. In most games, you go through the game level, by level, one after the other, occasionally finding 'level warps', allowing you to jump a few levels. However, on Wizkid, the level warps are built into the game. By playing normally, you can only access 4 of the 9 levels (1, 4, 7 and 9), and therefore you can only collect three kittens which may not be enough. So, somehow you have to make the link between the other levels. This is where the second part of the game comes in!
