The Beautiful Game is back, according to Sensible
Software anyway.
But is it?
Sensible first efforts to conquer the PC market
saw the return of the greatest football computer game ever to
grace the earth. It's still good, but is it still Sensible?
Yes. And No. The first thing you'll notice is the
huge graphical changes. Sensible Soccer has gone 3D, with fancy,
textured polygon graphics, motion captured player movements and
fully 3D replays. I know of many traditionalists who were not
too pleased at this change, but you've got to move with the times,
and at least the top-down perspective has been maintained.
There are also a couple of new introductions to
the gameplay. The use of a second button has been introduced,
with the second button being used to try and intercept the ball,
or to give a player a burst of speed on the ball. There's also
the introduction of volleys, diving headers, bicycle kicks, and
the like, which add a whole new world of possibilities and mean
that crossing the ball is no longer a waste of time.
But underneath all the fancy graphics, and added
gameplay elements, the heart of Sensi still beats strongly. It'll
take you a while to get used to all the new options, and adjust
to the different style of the game, but after a few hours dedicated
playing, you'll soon be pulling off those old Sensi manouevres.
It is true that many people were disappointed with
Sensible Soccer World Cup '98. But, to anyone who has been taken
in by this criticism, World Cup '98 WAS NOT A FINISHED GAME. Sensible
were forced to rush release the game in time for the world cup.
But despite all of this, it still managed to chart at number 5.
Sensible Soccer European Club edition is a much
more polished, and professional effort. The rough edges have been
taken off, and a fine, slick, simple and fun footy game has been
left. This was the version which was converted on to the playstation,
but the conversion proved a painful one which was rushed and littered with development problems.
And yes. THE 'KEEPERS ARE STILL CRAP!!
