Megalomania was widely regarded as a terrific God
Game, and was even placed at number 6 in Amiga Powers all time
top 100, in 1992 - not bad for Sensibles first shot at the 16
bit market. It clung on for a another year, charting at number
22 in 1993. it was one of the first games to take advantage of
digitized speech and was characterised by those extra little touches
of humour, and detail which make Sensible Softwares games stand
out from the crowd. It's approachable, friendly user interface
also earned it several acclaims. As Amiga Power said : "Bonkers
semi-benevolent dictatorship has never been so easy".
The aim of the game is to conquer worlds, through
building up armies, and sending them out to kick some butt. This
involves researching weapons, equipping armys, and mining materials.
It's clever in the way that, as you progress through the game,
your little men (not all that dissimilar from those Sensi Soccer
and CF men) evolve. SO, whilst you may start off researching cave-man
style spear, rock and pike weapons, an hour later you will be
building fighter planes, UFO's, and rocket launchers. You can
even force temporary alliegences with the enemy, in order to combine
to whup, a more powerful opponent. The allegances will be short-lived
however, as you battle to gain power of the vast glass orb, that
is your planet.
A sequel was planned and even started for this game, but Sensible
Software were too busy working on Sensible Soccer to ever complete
it!
