    Sensible Golf

    Game genre : Golf game

    Publisher : Virgin

    Released : 1995

    Platform : Amiga/ST/PC

No of players - lots and lots

Sensible Software's swansong on the Amiga, and perhaps their least successful game on this platform. Designed, programmed and released as a golf game, and not a golf simulation, which intended to test your gaming skills, and not your golfing skills.

But, despite offering a full career mode (including rankings, career earnings etc), the game is just too darn simple to be a long-lasting single player game. However, as a bit of arcadey, multiplayer fun, it's not all that bad.

Striking the ball uses the tried and tested method, of one click to start, one to select the power, and one to determine the amount of bend you put on the ball. But there's no wind or stance, or anything complicated to think about and after a short time, you'll find yourself hitting the greens, consistently, with two shots.

As the game uses Sensi famous 'Goodyear blimp' camera view, showing the contours of the green becomes a bit of a problem. The game copes with this by using small arrows all over the place, to show the directions of the slopes, but putting is still a bit of a frustrating lottery at times.

There are 72 holes in the game and 25 courses. The 25 courses are made up of a variety of these 72 holes, but it's fair to say that around half of these holes, are subtle re-workings of the other half, meaning that instead of having 450 vastly different holes, as you would expect with a golf game offering 25 courses, you actually get around 40. Hmmm.

But, look on the bright side. You can probably pick this game up for around £5, for your PC, and even cheaper if you shop around (I've seen it for £2.50), and at this price, it will certainly be money well spent.
